Nicht Zählen – sondern Zuhören

Not counting – but listening (for an english version: scroll to the bottom)

About a year ago I had just seen a film about women and their body image, I was once again angry about the weight reduction industry and my daughter had asked on my walk on the scales: „Mama, why are you doing this?“ Honestly: Why actually?

When the scale was half broken and only worked with numerous clicks before each weighing, I had a reason and decided: I don’t need the thing any more and disposed of it without further ado. One evening in the spring I suddenly needed a scale to check the weight of a suitcase. Without further ado I ran up one floor to my parents-in-law.

Recently I became aware that with the disposal of the scales an essential stress point in my life has simply disappeared. Before that, I did go straight to the scales in the morning, before almost every shower and if possible after going to the toilet and with little food in my stomach, and then had a lot of time under the shower to think about the number the device had spat out. What might have been the reason for her moving upwards since the last time? Was it the noodles last night at eight o’clock? Or the ice cream with cream two days ago? And if it nevertheless went down despite extensive dinner with friends and the super delicious wine, I just scratched my head and wondered: How can that be now?

It’s really amazing how much power we give to the numbers about us. It’s not a pure analysis of an actual state, it’s connected with a lot of emotion. What do the numbers in the end actually say about me? Nothing. Nothing at all. Since the weight does not even give information about the composition of the body, i.e. water, muscles, fat, etc., one cannot conclude from the number alone whether I am slim or lazy or seriously ill.

Daily weighing is the same as sitting down every evening with your spouse and evaluating how he or she behaved that day. If he was good, there is praise, if he was rebellious, we scold him strongly. You can do that. This relationship will probably not be particularly happy and fulfilled.

The easiest way to stop giving the stupid senseless numbers the opportunity to determine my value was for me to dispose of the scales. It was simply superfluous and had nothing to contribute to a fulfilled life.

At the same time this step was an act of resistance for me against whole branches of industry, which earn money by persuading me that my body is not in order and has to be changed. No, I am not ready to believe your lies! However, this form of resistance was too passive for me. Beside the not-more-weighing I announce meanwhile each advertisement, which is shown to me on facebook or Instagram with the message „So you finally take off“ or „In short time to the dream body“ immediately as insulting. I don’t have to lose weight. How do you get your pork cheeks to constantly tell us women that it is the most normal thing in the world to be dissatisfied with your own body? In the beginning it felt totally strange, but now I enjoy it. Every time I say no to a lie that is thrown towards me and yes to my own body and that which it is just now.

The balance that no longer exists has also supported another process, namely to listen more closely to my body. It is really amazing what he has to tell, if I am not constantly evaluating and criticizing him on the basis of numbers. In my experience it takes a bit of practice and trial and error to feel or hear what is fundamentally good.

I find it difficult to „listen“ to myself, especially in stressful times, because then so much else rushes through my thoughts. But when I take a few minutes and concentrate on myself, the needs usually become very clear:

  • I am thirsty and need more water.
  • I am stiff from sitting for a long time and have to be stretched.
  • I have a longing for woods and exercise.
  • You had so many exhausting thoughts, it would be great if you let off steam or laugh really hard.
  • Maybe you could snuggle up a bit with your children and sniff them, that relaxes me too.
  • No, not thinking and worrying again, yoga and breathing would be a better alternative now.
  • You have eaten a lot of bread and sweets in the last few weeks, I now need vitamins, lots of vitamins.
  • I like to feel sun and warmth and storms and rain. Preferably in combination with laughing and talking and long walks.

I wish myself so much that even in stressful, full times I succeed in listening well to my body and caring for it lovingly.

And above all I wish to be a shining example for my daughter in matters of body love. May she get to know her body as a lifelong home and good friend, take good care of it and feel very comfortable with it.
